Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey in Wilfrid
The keys fell out of a gym bag somewhere between the arena and the parking lot.
In plain words
A missing key is also the moment a household can stop carrying four. Because a rekey sets a fresh combination in every cylinder anyway, the locksmith can set the same combination in all of them, provided they share a keyway family, so the front door, back door, garage entry and side gate open with one key. Where a cylinder belongs to a different family, it can be swapped for one that matches during the same visit. The result is a single key on each ring, fewer copies to keep track of, and the certainty that the lost one operates none of them.
How the visit goesYour purse was taken from the back of a chair at a restaurant. The cards can be cancelled by phone tonight, but the house keys were in the side pocket beside a driver's licence that shows exactly where those keys fit.

How the visit goes

Which cylinders the key actually opened
The locksmith walks the property with you and tries to think like the key. Front door deadbolt and handle, the back door, a side door, the door between the garage and the house, the shed, a gate padlock, a basement walkout, the door to a storage room or workshop. Each cylinder the missing key fitted goes on a list. Anything it fitted that is not yours to change goes on a second list: a shared lobby door, a parking gate, a community mailbox compartment, a workplace. The first list becomes the scope of the visit; the second becomes a set of calls you can make with the locksmith's help while the work goes on.
Cutting the new keys on site
Common keys are cut on the van rather than ordered in, though some restricted systems need the blank from an authorised distributor first. The first key is cut on a code machine, a crisp, original-depth key rather than a copy of a copy, and tried in the first repinned cylinder before another is touched, so any adjustment happens once. The rest are cut to the same code, deburred, and tested in turn. Keys cut this way run smoothly from the start and stay accurate through years of copying, because every later duplicate can be made from the code rather than from a worn blade.
A note for the landlord or building manager
Where a tenancy, a condominium or a commercial lease is involved, the visit ends with a plain written note: which cylinders were rekeyed, how many keys were cut, who received them, and the key code if the property keeps a register. Tenants pass it to the landlord along with the landlord's set of new keys, keeping the paper trail on both sides current. Condominium managers can update the building's key record. A small business can file it with the lease. It is a few lines that save a long conversation later.

What affects the quote
Electronic credentials on the same ring
Clearing a garage opener's memory and re-pairing remotes, changing keypad codes or helping report a building fob are small tasks the quote names separately.
Homeowner-rekeyable cylinders without a working key
Resetting a homeowner-rekeyable cylinder when its key is gone uses that system's own reset fixture, where the installed lock supports one, and a few extra minutes per cylinder, which shows as a small line on the quote.
Getting to each cylinder
Doors spread across a large lot, a suite up several flights behind a locked lobby, or a gated property with a padlock at the road add walking and waiting time that the quote allows for.
What to have ready
- Have any of the locks been stiff, sticky or hard to turn lately?
- Do you know roughly how many copies of the old key exist?
- Would you like every exterior door to work on one key?
Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey: questions
QuestionsDo I need to be there for the whole visit?
An authorised adult should be present at the start, for identification and to agree the list of doors and the number of keys, and at the end, to test every key and take the count. In between, the work happens at the doors and on the van, so you are free to get on with your day inside. A property manager or a family member with your authorisation can stand in if you cannot be there.
Is rekeying the same as changing the locks?
They lead to the same result, a door that a different key opens, by different means. Changing the locks puts new hardware on the door. Rekeying keeps the deadbolt and handle you have and changes what is inside the cylinder, commonly the bottom pins on a conventional lock or a reset on a homeowner-rekeyable one, so a new key operates it and the old one turns nothing. For hardware in good condition, rekeying is the natural choice after a lost key because nothing about the door's look or fit changes.
What should I do before the locksmith arrives?
Walk the property and note every door the missing key opened, including the garage, shed and gate. Gather any keys you still have, since a working key helps in reading each cylinder. Have identification and, for tenants, something showing the tenancy. Decide roughly how many keys you want and whether you would like all doors on one key. If a garage remote or building fob was lost too, mention it when you book.
